The Market Street Theatre School is a training program for young students who desire to pursue the performing arts in a professional environment. Market Street Theatre School offers weekly classes on a variety of theatre skills for ages 6 to 18. Our approach to theatre education enables students to fully engage their bodies, faces, voices and imaginations. We also focus on using theatre to empower students to become active and informed citizens of the world. Our classes allow students the opportunity to express themselves; collaborate with others; explore the creative process; and investigate elements of story, character, themes and genres.
Training at the Market Street Theatre School can change young people's lives by nurturing in them the tools to think critically and objectively, to work collaboratively, and to become self-confident, assertive and active members of society.
Our classes offer the student skills in developing an ensemble (working together as a group), self-confidence, physical and vocal awareness and control, focus and personal discipline. We seek to create not only aspiring performers, but great human beings with an appreciation for the area of theatre. And, of course, we'll have a lot of fun along the way!
Market Street Theatre School's training program provides challenging, innovative, high-quality arts education opportunities to students of every level and cultural heritage.

The Classes: Primary through Senior Classes will meet each Saturday at Arts a la Carte located in the Old Brick Annex. Each class will have a lab production for family and friends. Main productions will be open audition. These larger productions will have separate rehearsal times and additional fees to cover production rights, scripts, costumes, etc. These productions will be optional and students do not have to participate.
Primary Ensemble, ages 6 -8
In addition to theatre games, we will introduce improvisation, which encourages students to use their imaginations to solve creative problems. Also, we will introduce playwriting, or simple writing skills using myth and fable to create character and dialogue.
Junior Ensemble, ages 9-12 (Sat. 9:00 - 10:30, 1 1/2 hours weekly):
In addition to the above skills, we further develop playwriting, voice and movement into a group created performance. We also introduce the audition, which teaches students how to conduct themselves in a professional way, including personal comportment, headshot/resume creation, and preparation for a professional audition. We prepare and rehearse a short contemporary monologue, the speech that actors perform to be considered for a role.
Senior Ensemble, ages 13-18 (Sat. 10:45 - 12:45, 2 hours weekly):
In addition to the above, we will explore Shakespeare and other classical material, to learn aspects of poetic language and ideas. Each student will prepare and rehearse a Shakespeare monologue. We will also prepare and rehearse contemporary material, using modern texts and language in two-person scenes. Additional topics may include: musical theatre, dance and stage combat (safe hand-to-hand stage fighting, including punches, slaps, rolls and reactions).
